Over the last few years ordinary residents have made useful strides in reducing their environmental footprint. Unfortunately, the City administration has made almost no progress. The good news here is that simple, cost effective solutions are at hand. Want an example? Green bin pick up used to be for only 6 months a year, like many other cities. Winter refuse froze in the green bin till Spring pickup. The City will change to monthly pick up over winter this coming year. However, residents will still skip at least half of the pick ups. We could save money, diesel, and greenhouse gas emissions by cutting pick ups further. Other sustainability improvements include better building standards. The cheapest time to add insulation is at construction. Improved transportation options include using hybrid and electric buses, cycling and all modes of micro and active transport . The city could encourage car pooling – one car pooled trip a week would make a big difference.
